Meet 'Patients as Educators' at Folkemødet 2023: Here is the program

When Folkemødet takes place on Bornholm in mid-June, it is for the first time with CAMES on board as event organizer. The team behind the course concept 'Patients as Teachers' is ready with a lot of exciting debate events.
At the core of the "Patients as Educators" training concept is patient involvement. It's about bridging the gap between patients and healthcare professionals. This is done by bringing patients and relatives directly into the education of 5,000 students and healthcare professionals annually.
The team is normally based at CAMES Rigshospitalet, but for a short time, June 15-17, they are moving to Folkemødet in Allinge on Bornholm, where they invite you to talks and debates about patient involvement.
Stop by the tent(J28) and join the conversation about how we in the healthcare sector can become even better at involving people with lived experience when it comes to educating healthcare professionals.

Want to know more?
Learn more about Patients as Educators
At CAMES, we find that students and healthcare professionals often want patients and relatives to be directly involved in the teaching. Learn more about our education concept. And check out how you can become a teacher yourself or involve patients and teachers in your teaching.
In the movie (right) you can meet Augusta, who explains how she works as a patient educator.
How to do it
The Patient Teachers programme at CAMES
Would you like to tell health and social care students about your
experiences with mental illness?
We are looking for
In the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education & Simulation (CAMES), which works purposefully with patient involvement, we are looking for people with mental illness, e.g. schizophrenia or depression, who want to share experiences about what matters in the meeting with social and health professionals.
What task do you have to help solve?
Your unique story can help break down taboos and stigma. Similarly, your experiences of working with social and health care students can shed light on what has made a difference for you in your interactions with mental health services. You can also talk about how you live with symptoms in your daily life.
Your role as a patient educator
When you talk about your experience of living with a mental illness, it takes place in an educational institution for a small group of students. For example, in nursing and social work education. Teaching is already underway.
You do not need to describe yourself as a "patient", but you should have experience in the psychiatric/health system.
Requirements to participate
- Have been diagnosed with mental illness for at least two years and be clear about the diagnosis and symptoms when talking and interacting with students.
- Have the possibility to teach in the Copenhagen area.
- Be able to meet during the daytime approximately three to four times in a semester of two hours each.
- Be able to participate in a CAMES workshop to qualify for the task.
The benefits
You will be part of a group of patient and carer educators in CAMES and you will receive continuous feedback to ensure well-being and quality.
You will receive a small fee for each time you teach.
How to do it
Become a carers' trainer
Would you like to talk to nursing and education students about your experiences as a carer of a person with mental illness?
We are looking for
In our training center, we are committed to the involvement of family members. We are therefore looking for relatives of people with mental illness who would like to share experiences in teaching about mental illness for social and health professional students.
What task do you have to help solve?
Illness affects not only the patient, but also the life situation of their relatives. As a caregiver, you may feel overlooked?
As a carer educator you will tell healthcare professionals what it is like to be a carer and what they should pay special attention to.
Your unique story can help focus students' attention on the importance of seeing the person behind the disease.
Your role as a carer educator
Before you start, we'll talk to you and find out if becoming a carer educator could be for you. You will then be qualified for the job.
The qualification takes place at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education & Simulation (CAMES), Ryesgade 53 B, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.
When you talk about your experiences as a carer, you will do so at an educational institution in the Capital Region of Denmark.
The qualification will take place in spring 2023. Teaching will start during fall 2023.
Requirements to participate
- Being a relative of a person diagnosed with mental illness
- Be clear about your situation - able to be constructive when engaging with students
- Have the possibility to teach in Copenhagen
- Be able to meet during the daytime approximately three to four times during a semester of two hours each
- Participate in a CAMES workshop to qualify for the assignment.
The benefits
You will be part of a group of caregiver trainers in CAMES and you will receive regular feedback to ensure well-being and quality.
You will receive a small honorarium for each time you teach, as well as an amount to help cover your transportation costs.
