CAMES is looking for patient and carer educators with experience in psychiatry

by | Mar 22, 2023 | All

Would you like to tell health professionals and students about your experiences when it comes to mental illness. Either as a patient or a relative? Your knowledge, experience and advice are highly valued, which is why we are currently looking for patient and carer trainers.

At the heart of the 'Patients as Educators' training concept is patient involvement. It is about building bridges between patients and healthcare professionals. We do this by bringing patients and their relatives directly into the training of 5,000 students and healthcare professionals every year.

We are currently looking for family and patient educators in the field of psychiatry.

As a teacher, you will share your experience of mental illness with students and health professionals.

There is a need for both caregiver and patient educators to help increase understanding of mental illness and break down taboos and stigma.

We are interested in hearing from anyone with patient and family experience in psychiatry, but are currently primarily looking for people with lived experience of schizophrenia, schizotypy and ADHD.

As a patient educator, you can talk to healthcare professionals about how mental illness affects everyday life and what can make a difference when working with mental health services.

Illness affects not only the patient, but also the life situation of relatives.

As a carer educator, you will tell healthcare professionals what it is like to be a carer and what they should pay special attention to.

How to do it

The Patient Teachers programme at CAMES

Would you like to tell health and social care students about your
experiences with mental illness?

We are looking for
Imagine that the roles are reversed - You are teaching students in social and health education on what it is like to live with mental illness - You can do this by becoming part of the Patients as Educators concept.

In the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education & Simulation (CAMES), which works purposefully with patient involvement, we are looking for people with mental illness, e.g. schizophrenia or depression, who want to share experiences about what matters in the meeting with social and health professionals.

What task do you have to help solve?
As a patient educator, your stories help to show the person behind the diagnosis. It can be difficult for others to understand how illness affects everyday life. We want people who are living with mental illness themselves to tell professionals what it is like and what they need to be aware of.

Your unique story can help break down taboos and stigma. Similarly, your experiences of working with social and health care students can shed light on what has made a difference for you in your interactions with mental health services. You can also talk about how you live with symptoms in your daily life.

Your role as a patient educator
Before you start, we'll talk to you and find out if becoming a patient educator could be for you. You will then be qualified for the task at CAMES, Ryesgade 53 B, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.

When you talk about your experience of living with a mental illness, it takes place in an educational institution for a small group of students. For example, in nursing and social work education. Teaching is already underway.

You do not need to describe yourself as a "patient", but you should have experience in the psychiatric/health system.

Requirements to participate
  • Have been diagnosed with mental illness for at least two years and be clear about the diagnosis and symptoms when talking and interacting with students.
  • Have the possibility to teach in the Copenhagen area.
  • Be able to meet during the daytime approximately three to four times in a semester of two hours each.
  • Be able to participate in a CAMES workshop to qualify for the task.
The benefits
Your story has a positive impact on the development of the future of psychiatry.

You will be part of a group of patient and carer educators in CAMES and you will receive continuous feedback to ensure well-being and quality.

You will receive a small fee for each time you teach.

How to do it

Become a carers' trainer

Would you like to talk to nursing and education students about your experiences as a carer of a person with mental illness?

We are looking for

In our training center, we are committed to the involvement of family members. We are therefore looking for relatives of people with mental illness who would like to share experiences in teaching about mental illness for social and health professional students.

What task do you have to help solve?

Illness affects not only the patient, but also the life situation of their relatives. As a caregiver, you may feel overlooked?

As a carer educator you will tell healthcare professionals what it is like to be a carer and what they should pay special attention to.

Your unique story can help focus students' attention on the importance of seeing the person behind the disease.

Your role as a carer educator

Before you start, we'll talk to you and find out if becoming a carer educator could be for you. You will then be qualified for the job.

The qualification takes place at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education & Simulation (CAMES), Ryesgade 53 B, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.
